Healthy Cities NetworkWithin Europe, the structure of the Healthy Cities Project translates in the WHO European Healthy Cities Network and in the Network of the National Healthy Cities Networks.
The European Healthy Cities Network consists in cities of several European countries, appointed after an application process which involves meeting a set of criteria for designation and eligibility defined by the WHO.
This network works in five-year phases. It is now on Phase IV, which began in 2003 and will end in 2008. Phase IV focuses on four main action areas:
- “Healthy Ageing”, which approaches health, health care and basic needs of senior citizens, with a special focus on independent and active life, creating appropriate environments and guaranteeing the access to adequate services;
- “Healthy Urban Planning”, which stimulates and supports urbanism professionals in integrating health considerations in their planning strategies and initiatives, especially where equity, well-being, sustainable development and community security are concerned;
- “Physical Activity”, which stimulates and supports regular sports practicing and an active lifestyle as a means to promote physical and mental health, preventing a number of pathologies associated with lifestyles;
- “Health Impact Assessment”, which offers a structured framework to identify the consequences of a certain measure, program or project on health.
The Network of the National Healthy Cities Networks includes the 30 National Networks which currently exist in all Europe, involving over 1000 cities and towns. The Portuguese Healthy Cities Network integrates said Network since June 2001.
